It is truly an honor to work with Eddie and his team again on the posters for Eddie's tour stop in San Diego which happened earlier this evening.

I was thrilled to have San Diego assigned to me. Long ago I was a resident of SD for three years during my first games job, but I remembered going to visit Shamu at Sea World a few times as a kid so it felt natural to include the Orca in the image. The first sketch I sent Eddie and his team was Shamu jumping unconfined and free off the waters of San Diego. Eddie gave it a go, but then he also wanted another poster to contrast the first and to make a statement. Something darker that commented on how Shamu is not in his natural setting at Sea World, kind of sad and dejected. So the second poster shows the whale being still in its stage area and I added an Orca shaped cloud jumping like the first poster, as if Shamu is dreaming of being free. It was a wonderful idea to have two posters that can comment on that and I enjoyed the ease of collaborating with Eddie on these thoughts. Big thanks to Eddie and to Chris for this amazing opportunity, and to Frank and Roberta for all their help!

Posters will go on sale this coming Friday, noon PST on my Big Cartel page. Here are the images, and I hope you enjoy!

SEA NO EVIL BENEFIT SHOW

I will be participating for the first time in the "Sea No Evil" show which benefits the efforts of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and to help raise awareness of conserving our precious oceans and the life contained in it. The auction is this Saturday night, June 25 which is being held at the Riverside Municipal Auditorium. Doors open at 6pm.

I am extremely excited to contribute to this show. Those of you who are familiar to my work know that many of my images depict sea creatures telling stories close to my heart. My affection toward the beauty of sea life came early in my life and is something I hope to continue with my children. The horrendous acts aimed toward these peaceful creatures jeopardizes the opportunity for future generations to enjoy them the their ability to thrive.

My piece is called "Bearing" which was created specifically for this show. I chose the word bearing for a few reasons. The image shows Captain Paul Watson's fleet being represented by flying whales "bearing down" on the so called research vessel of the Japanese fleet. Watching Whale Wars, it's all about putting pressure and searching, so finding ones bearings in the vast ocean is another play on the title. Also, the men and women on these ships voluntarily bear a great responsibility as champions for these creatures.

"Bearing"

Flier for show

I had the opportunity earlier this year to have my children go on a whale watching trip during vacation. We were able to observe many Humpback Whales and they enjoyed this experience thoroughly. Through efforts of the Sea Shepherds and benefit shows like this, hopefully we will have many opportunities like this and for many generations to come. Here is a pic of my boys holding on to the rail and checking out these magnificent creatures:

GET TO GIVE ART BENEFIT

The backpack company Ark Collective is hosting an art show tonight which is aimed to raise money for their designated educational charity and spread awareness on how poverty affects our youth's education. 100% of the proceeds from the show will go to the charity. Here is the info:

The concept was a fun one. Some of the backpacks that Ark Collective produces are not fit to go to market, so instead of getting rid of them why not make art on them for a great cause. Each artist was given one of these packs with the opportunity to do anything to them. Here are some progress pics of my pack along with my finished product.

Here we have the pack, piece of wood that I shaped using a table saw and an electric sander, and my boy's puzzle sea horse that they don't use anymore which I gessoed over to paint on. I cut out some of the pack so I could insert the shaped piece of wood.

Used screws to fix the wood panel to the pack

Lay in of the drawing and sea horse before paint

More drilling. A big thanks to Greg for the invite.

Here is my piece "Shady":

It's been a while since I have painted a tree and I've never painted a rabbit before, so I really enjoyed painting this one up. Got some clouds back on the canvas as well. I will be attending the show tomorrow night, and I hear many of the artists involved will be too. Come out an make it if you can! The show is based on how artists will interpret the Chinese Zodiac. What's exciting for me is that this is my first opportunity to show a piece of art in NY, so a big thank you to John Wong from me for the invite.

I decided to choose the sheep for my piece. It's a fun departure from my aquatic theme, but I still managed to get it in there somehow. I do plan on branching out to other types of animals, so this is a great springboard for that. My piece is called "Portrait Of A Happy Thought". The line-up is awesome. You can see all the work with this preview link for those interested: Link Here is my piece:

RUEL PASCUAL SOLO SHOW

I am very excited to post that my artist bud Ruel Pascual is having his first solo show at Van Eaton Galleries Saturday, February 19. What we had in common was we were both building our portfolio up to gain entry into that famous college up on the hill from PCC. As we got in, our terms got busy, which ended up separating a bit and we lost touch. Years after Art Center, I sadly found out she had passed on. Art Center is having a show called "The Mini Show" which features art from Illustration alumni to help benefit future Illustration students of the school in Mini's name. All of the art at this one night only event is at an affordable level, priced at $300 or less. If you are in the area, please come down to the school, and possibly score a great piece at a great price for a great cause. The show is Saturday night October 23, at Art Center's South Campus. Event and sales start at 8pm till 11pm. Link for more information:

MINI SHOW

I am honored to be included and hopefully contribute in her name. Opening reception will be from 7-10. At drop off I got to see what Mr. Strawn had going on and wow, was I impressed! I'm going to have to obtain a piece of his someday. He paints on layers of glass which give a really nice dimensional feel, and all situated in these awesome custom made and painted shadow boxes. Plus his technique is great and his subject matter is really fun.

I did 7 paintings accompanied by 7 studies. Would have loved to do a bit more, but I'm still trying to figure out this whole full time dad of twins and full time painter thing. I did get a step closer with this experience for sure. Here is a link where you can see his amazing work for the show:

Ushiro Pieces

One of my favorites being a cat owner and cat lover:

Please check it out!

Information on my two person show at Gallery1988 coming soon!

NEW STUFF

Just sharing a couple of pieces I recently finished. One of which was the largest piece I have ever done at 48 X 32, and the first in which I wrapped the painting around the sides. This first piece was for some friends in the bay area. The piece is similar to the Beastie Boys painting I did last year, but the inspiration and story is very different. Along with the painting is a small glimpse of the studio:

It was a fun challenge at that size, and I'm going to have to try something even larger next time. Next up is a painting I did for fellow artist bud James, who was the print master for my recently released prints. James did a fantastic job and was an awesome guy to work with. Thanks man! So as you all know, I like to mix and match things, and this twist was a fun one to do:

Time to get busy for a 2 person show in September. I've been so busy with my growing boys and have been trying to get some paintings done in between. I just put up three prints on my Big Cartel page. They are of "Fleet", "Bound", and "Port" which are signed and limited to 25 for each image. Many of my paintings are special to me, but these particular images are a bit more, and I'm happy to offer them to those interested. I will be sharing a bit more coming up!

WE WILL MISS YOU NORM SCHUREMAN

I was extremely saddened to learn that someone who made such a huge impact in my art life and countless others, passed away this Saturday evening due to a completely senseless act. I was fortunate to have taken Norm Schureman's Viscom class at Art Center, which helped me become the artist I am today. It was a great privilege to have known him and learn from one of the best.

I started art late. I'm guessing late for most people with aspirations to become an artist. Especially from what I saw when I was trying to get into Art Center. I was a terrible sketcher, and even having a sketchbook intimidated me. I was always embarrassed to show my sketchbook to others and was surrounded by other artists who knew they wanted to become artists since they were kids. Most had sketchbooks in which every page could be framed and shown in a gallery. Norm's Viscom 6 class was dedicated to the sketch and sketchbook with a simple black ink technical pen. I absolutely needed this stuff.

With line, he showed us how to focus on what was important, and indicate what was not. It was great going to museums to sketch dinosaur bones, trips to botanical gardens to study foliage and environments, and even break down and combine various animal species that we would sketch. He made the class fun but still intimidating, which actually helped me be less intimated on some level. I mean, you really need to get your nerves in check when he asks two students at a time to draw on the chalk board in front of the whole class. It wasn't always easy, but with his patience and teaching style, I was able to get the confidence and the tools needed from him to help me try and succeed.

His kindness, expertise, and fun loving attitude for his craft will be something past students were fortunate to experience, but something that future students will dearly miss. You will be missed Norm.

LAST NIGHT

My friend and artist bud Ruel Pascual invited me to an artist preview night for a show he is in at La Luz De Jesus Gallery here in Los Angeles. There are well over 100 artists involved and over 300 pieces at this show. I'm really enjoying his use of a limited pallet. His pieces are driven by his personal experiences which I can appreciate, yet sometimes feel I could put myself within the piece, and even relate to something that could be completely different to what my have been on his mind. They open up my imagination and I find myself immersed within them.

Last night was a great time! Since having the boys, it's been tough for me to get out to shows and mingle with other artists. Opening reception is from 7 to 10 pm. Its great to be in a show with the amazing talents of Tin, Kendra Binney, and May Ann Licudine. Here is the postcard image:

I believe this is going to be the final show in Gallery1988's current space before they move to another location. I will always have a place in my heart for 1173 Sutter Street, the site of my first and only. Wow, it's crazy looking back at those pieces.

So, I've been messing around with some white backgrounds on my pieces, which is new for me. Nothing overly deep behind it. I've always liked the aesthetic, there is purity about it, and I feel it could sort of represent a rebirth for me and my art. I hope to take it to new heights if I am so lucky to have more opportunities. I enjoy how it allows the subject to stand more on it's own, and I really enjoy painting clouds, and the white lets them have some more attention within the confines of the canvas. The white really allows me to play with negative shapes of the subject and clouds. Here are a couple of peaks of what I have coming for the show:

                                                                 Propelled

Venting

He-Man Show

Happy New Year! The first show I will be involved in this new year is the "Under the Influence: He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" show at Gallery1988 Los Angeles, this Friday evening, January 8.

This show should be a lot of fun. I hear that the gallery is transforming into a mini Castle Grayskull, so along the same theme, I've created my own version and tribute to the castle itself, called "Gray Skies":

I had a good time with this piece, and kept it more towards the backgrounds. I tried to go a little looser with it, and while painting, thought back to some ideas of painting as a concept artist. 2010 seems like a good year to do some exploring with some technique and ideas so we'll see how it goes.

Gearing up for a February show at Gallery1988 San Fransisco and will be trying a couple of different things there as well. Now, it will be just small things here and there, so no worries. I'm not going to start painting pretty ladies, or skulls everywhere. Actually, the He-Man piece was partly fun in that this was my first skull ever! Probably my last.

FEATURE ON MONZUKI

I wanted to thank the friends at Monzuki for featuring my work and sharing their kind words on their Blog post "Swimming In The Sky".

They have a wonderful blog, which aims to share and publicize creative people from art and design. What a crazy but fun day it was. I would like to thank all the family and great friends that came out to support the boys. I'd also like to thank everyone who helped with the preparation. The day couldn't have been as perfect as it was without the help. Here they were on their big day:

At one point I think we had around 150 people in our backyard. Crazy!!! We even had some great artist buds come to the party like El Maz, Ruel Pascual, Samir Patel, John Wu, Andy Lee, Wes Louie, Brian Yam, Tony Mora, and Kong Ly. I just put up links to most of these guys.

So now that the party is over, I've got a few paintings for some extremely patient folks I've been meaning to complete and will get to them now. Thanks for all of your patience through all of this. Hopefully I'll have more art posts in the very near future.

COME OUT TO PLAYEEAAAY

This is an image for a flier I created for our twins first birthday party that is coming up soon. The image is similar to an older painting I did that my wife loved. Since we don't own it, I wanted to do something along the same lines but this one is going to stay in the family:

Wow, I can't believe they have been in our lives for almost a whole year now. Time sure flies. I miss them how they are each day, because they seem to change from one day to the next. But I look forward to each day to see what changes they bring. But they have made a permanent change in our lives, one that cannot be replaced. There was a time when we thought we would not ever have you both. What a gift you truly are. Happy birthday boys. I've been busy trying to get our backyard ready for the boys one year birthday party. I can't believe that these past 9 plus months have gone by quick and that they are growing so fast. So I thought I'd give myself a little head start in preparation for their big day.

So my very first Father's Day came and went a couple of weekends ago. Spent the day in San Diego at a wedding of great friends of ours, Marian and Derrick. Congrats guys! Here is a pic of the boys at the reception, quite a bit bigger now, with some spit up.

As we were leaving the reception, we saw a sight which I'd never thought I'd see. I guess I was showing my art along with some of the painting masters!

The Tamayo is most likely for Rufino Tamayo. When I was very young, we would go down to San Diego often and there were people selling Rufino Tamayo prints in frames by the beach we used to go to. My dad used to tell me it was his paintings and that one day I might get his talent for art, and I actually believed him. Well, I did get some kind of talent for art, but definitely not from him.

So I've been meaning to post some more links to some good friends of mine. First up is my bud Edwin Ushiro. I first met Ed in my final term at Art Center and had the opportunity to befriend him again when he went to work at the same game company I used to work at. After he left, he went on to pursue freelance work, and has made an impact in the gallery world with his amazing art. Here is an amazing piece of his that I was able to snap at a recent show:

Next up is my good friend Ruel Pascual. I was able to befriend him through a mutual friend a few years back. Hi Samir! At the time he was and still is working in the Animation biz, but he recently has been featured in a handful of group shows at Gallery1988. I see pretty amazing things for him. His talent for painting continues to grow every time a see a new piece. And I'm so happy for him that his paintings get bought up pretty quick. Here is a piece from a recent show at Gallery1988 called "Mr. T Party". I wish I could have bought this one. It's just awesome:

So the links are up so check these guys out!

QUIET STORM

I will be in a 4 person show which opens at Gallery1988 Los Angeles at 7PM tomorrow night, 5/26, called Quiet Storm. I am excited to be a part of a show along with the amazing talents of Scott Campbell, Krista Huot, and Ghost Patrol.

So, my mind is constantly filled with thoughts of my wife and my twin boys who are now about 8 months old. Man does time fly! So naturally, when I've been creating art and thinking about concepts for pieces, I use them as a source of inspiration. Most of the pieces in the show pretty much reflect this. Here are a couple of the larger pieces:

I wanted to make an alphabet book for my sons by creating 26 different flowers and showing the letter in cloud form in the image. This will be something of a personal project so I can make a bound and printed book out of it just for my boys to enjoy and see how weird their daddy is. I decided to include A, B, and C for the show, so here is B and its study drawing:

Also, I'm using Puffer Fish to express either how I'm feeling at the time or show things that I enjoy and miss doing since becoming a father. But believe me, I'm not complaining one bit. Having these little guys here is the greatest thing that has happened for us. Here are a couple of examples:

I will be in attendance along with Krista and Scott, so maybe I'll see some of you there!

STREET FIGHTER TRIBITE SHOW-NEW LINKS TO FRIENDS

Gallery Nucleus will be exhibiting a show featuring artwork inspired by Street Fighter, beginning Saturday, April 25.

I have been a huge fan of the games, and I don't even want to know how many quarters I fed into Street Fighter II machines growing up. But this show was a great opportunity to create something fun, and to rekindle fond memories of a game I played many times long ago.

Here is my acrylic on panel painting titled "Path's End":

Thai culture is so vibrant and rich. That's why I had to chose M. Bison and Sagat battling it out in a surreal type, Thailand setting. Also, the fish in the air is a beautiful species you can find there, called Arapaima.

I am also excited to be in a show with great friend, and extremely talented artist John Wu. We became friends working together on titles such as Ratchet and Clank and Resistance: Fall Of Man. He eventually left the company we both worked for at that time, but we have remained good friends.

Also exhibiting at the tribute is another good guy and talented artist who I met at the same job, Kinman Chan. Amazing Concept Artists these guys are, so I wanted to begin putting on links to old friends on my blog starting with these two. More links to come from friends that I've made from my time in the industry and from other friendly and amazing artists I've been fortunate to meet. Check them out!

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY GALLERY 1988!

Gallery 1988, which is owned by Katie Cromwell and Jensen Karp, is celebrating the gallery's 5th year of existence this coming Thursday, April 2, with a show called "Idiot Box". The theme is based around the guilty pleasures of TV. Three years ago, I was fortunate enough to exhibit my first piece with them called "Battle For My Affection":

So for me, it's sort of an anniversary of my gallery relationship with them as well. Thinking back fondly to that time, I've created a similar piece called "Another Battle For My Affection" for this show:

So, my relationship with Katie and Jensen began as a patron, after purchasing a beautiful Kawasaki piece from them in 2005. The following year, there was an art contest where the winner would be included in the I AM 8BIT exhibition at Gallery1988. Dreaming of showing my art in their gallery, I put together "Battle For My Affection" and won, much to my surprise! So at drop off, I remember Katie saying something like, "Hey, I know you!". What an honor it was for me as well to find out that Katie later bought my piece! They then took a chance on me in group shows to see how I'd do. After a handful of shows, they asked if I'd like to be represented in Los Angeles and San Francisco through the gallery, and of course, I said yes!

Because of their friendship and support, I have been able to meet so many wonderful people, have been inspired by the art that they surround their galleries with, and have grown as an artist. It's been so much fun to be part of their gallery family, and for that I am truly grateful. I wish them continued success, health, and happiness.

NICE TO GET OUT

I hope everyone is enjoying the long weekend and had a nice Valentines Day!

So I've been dealing with an ankle and knee condition for a few weeks, which is slowly getting better for now. It could flair up again, but we'll see. The problem has pretty much disabled me and has kept me couped up in the house and in bed away from the easel and paints. Lots to do because of my physical problems, so time to get back to painting.

During this time, I received a new camera, a Lumix LX3. The camera has a ton of capabilities for a point and shoot that I'm still learning about. I was able to take a few shots here and there while dealing with my illness so I thought I'd share a couple. Valentines Day was the first day I had been able to get out of the house for enjoyment in quite some time, so I took a picture of one of our favorite desserts from our evening. We also took a family day stroll at one of our local outdoor malls yesterday, which was nice. I've got some pics from that as well. Hopefully, more art posts will follow shortly.

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; The very first show I will be involved with this year is Under The Influence: An Official Tribute to The Beastie Boys at Gallery1988LA, Thursday, January 8. It's going to be a great show with an amazing line-up of artists:

I enjoyed painting a larger piece for Vivisect Playset, so I decided to try even bigger at 40 X 30 with this one. Again, it was a challenge, but I had a great time doing it. I was inspired by the Beastie Boys song Alive. Particularly the positive messages in the song and the imagery from the music video. If you haven't heard the lyrics or seen the video, please check it out.

"Socialize"

Have a great year everyone!

VIVISECT PLAYSET 5

I will be part of the annual group show Vivisect Playset curated by Luke Chueh and Gallery1988. The show opens tonight, 12/5, at Gallery1988's San Fransisco space. I've worried about the results I would have working bigger but I have to say I'm pretty inspired to create more pieces this large or larger in the future. It was a challenge but I found it very enjoyable.

My piece is titled "Fleet" and is the first work that is truly dedicated to my wife and baby boys since they where born. It's based off a drawing called "Fleet Study" I had previously done. I wanted to show a determination and pushing forward in life as we raise our family. My wife Joy is the strength and backbone of the family and I wanted to portray that as our boys are just starting the ride of life and playing along.

"Fleet"

BLACK MARIA GALLERY SHOW

I'll be part of a group show at Black Maria Gallery called "Black Market At Black Maria: Skip The Mall" this Saturday, November 22. I visited the gallery for the first time at drop off and I really liked the place. The people I met were really nice and I was surprised how close the gallery was from my house.

I was thinking about my boys when coming up with a concept for one of the paintings, which also brought out some issues when I grew up which was the theme for the other one. There are just some fears I have as I hope to be the best father I can be. I'm sure this is not the last time these themes occur.

I'm also trying to incorporate a bit more line work using ink into the paintings. I feel there's a disconnect between my drawings and paintings, as if a completely different artist created them. So I'm trying to create a bit more cohesion. It's a process and we'll see how it goes. Here are the pieces for the show:

"Untitled"

"Hothead"

"A Space In There"

PHILLY SHOW

I will be participating in "The Inaugural Show" at T&P Fine Art in Philadelphia next month.
